The National Recreation and Park Association's Playground Maintenance Course is a one-day (6.25 hour) educational course that provides participants with an understanding of basic playground hazards, applying safe maintenance practices on equipment, identifying surfacing types and proper maintenance procedures, and establishing proper record keeping practices. Participants receive a certificate upon completion of the Playground Maintenance Course. Please be advised this is not an Inspector Certification.

Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrating an increased awareness of the playground safety standards and guidelines.
- Identifying the need for maintenance of playgrounds, surfacing and site items in play areas.
- Implementing playground maintenance practices.
This course has been approved for .6 CEUs. CEUs from the Playground Maintenance Course can be used towards renewal of the CPSI certification for anyone whose certification expires July 1, 2026 or later. The Playground Maintenance Course provides 0.2 CEU for Group A and 0.4 for Group B.

Brian Anderson
Brian has dedicated more than 35 years to the parks and recreation profession, working his way from frontline maintenance staff to senior leadership. For the past 25 years, he has served as a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, combining field experience with management-level decision-making. He brings a practical, owner-focused perspective to playground safety — having managed installations, collaborated with designers and contractors, and overseen long-term maintenance programs to ensure facilities remain safe, compliant, and sustainable. A graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in Park & Natural Resource Management, Brian is also a Certified Arborist and has been teaching in the NRPA Playground Maintenance Course program since 2016. He is passionate about helping park professionals build safer, more resilient playground systems.
Class Size: Limited Spaces. Registration is first come, first served. Registrations will not be accepted without payment. Individual spaces will not be held until payment is received.
Cancellation/Substitution/Accommodations Policies
- Cancellations must be submitted in writing and received by May 16, 2026 in order to receive a refund of the registration fee less $75 for manuals plus a $125 service charge.
- No refunds will be granted if request is received after May 16, 2026.
- Substitutions for those unable to attend will be allowed, it’s the original registrant’s responsibility to provide their replacement with the mailed course materials. Substitutions must receive prior approval from FRPA and must be at least one week in advance of the course
- Any accommodation requests must be placed in writing to the FRPA offices before May 16, 2026.
